Lake Naivasha

Few lakes have a more commanding or lovely setting than Lake Naivasha, the highest and purest of the Rift Valley lakes. Mt. Longonot (2,777m/9,109 ft) in the distance, shades the lake in misty blues and purples.

At Hell's Gate gorge with its steam jets and Fisher's Tower a pinnacle of soaring rock, game abounds and the rarest of Kenya's birds of prey, the lammergeyer nests

Lake Naivasha is one of the rift valley's freshwater lakes and its ecology is quite different from that of the soda lakes. Its home to an incredible variety of bird species and a focus of conservation efforts in Kenya.

Since its a freshwater lake which can be used for irrigation purposes, the surrounding countryside is a major production area of fresh fruit snd vegetables as well as beef cattle both for domestic consumption and export. There's even a vineyard on the eastern shore.

On the western side of Lake Naivasha, there is a crater lake with lush vegetation at the bottom of a beautiful but small volcanic crater. If you have transport its worth visiting. You have to cross private land for about 500 metres in order to get there, so close all gates behind or ask permission if necessary.

South of the lake is the Hell's Gate National Park which is well worth exploring and one of the few national parks in which you're allowed to walk.

Getting There

The usual access to Lake Naivasha is along Moi South Lake Rd. This also goes past the turn-off to Hell's Gate National Park. there are frequent matatus between Naivasha town and Kongoni on the western side of the lake.

Getting Around

Motorboats for game-viewing on Crescent Island can be hired from the Safariland Club. the lake Naivasha Hotel also offers trips to Crescent Island for much the same price.

Much cheaper rowing and motorised boats can be hired from Fisherman's Camp, but its a long way from there to Crescent Island
