NAIROBI NATIONAL PARK

The greatest attraction Nairobi has, is not in the city at all, but just outside - the Nairobi National Park . Of the more popular species, only the elephant is an absentee, hippos wallow in the river pools, giraffes dominate the plains.Lions and cheetahs and in excess of fifty rhinos have made this park justly famous.

The Animal Orphanage, beside the main gate, provides sanctuary to orphans of the wild from all over the country. This park is the most accessible of all Kenya's game parks, being only 7 kms from the city centre. You should set aside a morning or an afternoon to see it. As in all the game parks, you must visit it in a vehicle; walking is prohibited. This means you will have to to either arrange a lift at the entrance gate with other tourists, go on atour, or hire a car.

Nairobi National Park is the oldest park in the country, having been created in 1946. For a park close to the city centre, you can see an amaizing variety of animals- with a backdrop of jets coming in to land at Jomo Kenyatta International airport which is adjacent to the park! Gazelle, oryx, lions, zebras, giraffes, buffaloes, cheetahs and leopards are all seen regularly. Elephants are not found on this park as the habitat is unsuitable. However, its in this park that you have one of the best chances for spotting a rhino- they are doing well here because poachers prefer more remote areas.

Major Attractions:

  • Walking trails at hippo pools
  • Predators:- Lions, leopards, cheetah, hyena
  • Ivory Burning Site Monument

Accommodation

There are no accommodation facilities at the Nairobi National Park. But there is a wide range of well developed accommodation facilities are available in the city. Have a look at our Kenya-Nairobi hotels on this site.

The concerntration of game in Nairobi National Park are higher in the dry season when water sources outside the park have dried up. Water is more plentiful inside the park as small dams have been built on the Mbagathi River which forms the southern boundary of the park.
