Samburu National Reserve & Buffalo Springs National Reserve

Rugged and remote, Samburu National Reserve & Buffallo Springs (298km/115m) lie just within the fascinating semi-desert Northern District of Kenya. With a magnificent background of jagged, purple mountains, they provide some of the best and most colourful game viewing in the country. The tranquil Uaso Nyiro River flowing through the park, provide a natural habitat for crocodiles. Long necked gerenuk, grevy's zebra and graceful reticulated giraffe are species not found in the less arid areas to the south.

Elephants seek solace and contentment in the shallow waters of this river, which together with Buffalo Springs, supports a large variety of African mammals, cheetahs and leopards, being particularly well represented. A most impressive sight beside the pools and streams are great flocks of sandgrouse, which come to drink every morning around 8.00 a.m. as regularly as clockwork.

Doves and guinea-fowl abound and the giant martial eagle perched on some high vantage point

Samburu National Reserve & Buffallo Springs all lie along the banks of Ewaso Nyiro River. They are mainly scrub desert and open savanna plain, broken here and there by small rugged hills. The river, which is permanent, supports a wide variety of game and you can see elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, leopards, and lions as well as dik dik, warthog and reticulated giraffes.

These parks are less touristed than Amboseli or Maasai Mara so, once you're out of the immediate vicinity of the lodges and camp sites, you'll frequently have the place to yourself.

Places to Stay

In Buffalo Springs National Reserve there are four public camps sites close to the Gara Mara entrance gate. For those with adequate finances, there is Buffalo Springs Tented Lodge up at the north eastern end of the reserve just south of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

In Samburu National Game Reserve, the most convinient places to stay are the public camp sites close to the Samburu Lodge and close to the wooden bridge which connects the western extremity of Buffalo Springs to Samburu across the Ewaso Nyiro River

The sites themselves are fairly pleasant and adjascent to the river but facilities are minimal and the toilets are nothing short of pigsties
