Tanzania Parks > Lake Manyara > Arusha Nat. Park > Serengeti > Tarangire Nat. Park > Mt. Kilimanjaro > Ngorongoro > Selous Game Reserve Serengeti National Park
It lies between the shores of Lake Victoria in the East and Kenya's "Serengeti, the Masai Mara, to the Northwest. Hills rising out of the seemingly endless plains, rivers and small lakes, magnificent rocky outcrops and the occasional swamp all add to the park's fascination. In addition to its vast herds of wildebeest, zebra, thomson's gazelle and other plains game the Serengeti is renowned for its lion and other predators, including the wild dog, spotted hyena and jackal. Leopards may often be seen along the Seronera River. The wealth of bird life is of special interest, colourful rollers, bee-eaters, kingfishers and sunbirds are common, as are large birds of prey, game birds and water fowl. During May and June or sometimes earlier, Lake Ndutu at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands is the starting point for one of the great natural wonders of nature, the Serengeti migration. A million wildebeests, each driven by the same ancient rythm, fulfill their instinctive role in the inescapable cycle of life: a frenzied 3 week bout of territorial conquest and mating; survival of the fittest as 40 kms long colums plunge through crocodile infested waters on the annual exodus north; replenishing the species in a brief population explosion that produces more than 8000 calves a day before the 1000 km pilgrimage begins again More than 6,000,000 hooves pound the legendary Serengeti National Park. Every year, triggered by the rains, more than 1,000,000 wilderbeests, 200,000 zebras and 300,000 Thompson gazelle gather to undertake the long trek to new grazing lands The Serengeti National Park is a sense of seeing to the
ends of the earth, the surnburnt savannah shimmering to the horizon. Yet,
after the rains this golden horizon is magically transformed into an endless
green carpet flecked with wildflowers. But there are also wooded hills,
towering termite mounds and rocky kopjes, rivers lined with elegant stands
of trees, ebony and acacia, stained orange by dust. It is so vast you
may be the only human audience when a pride of lions masterminds a siege,
focused unswervingly on their next meal. View our Tanzania
